What size sheets for hospital beds?

What size sheets for hospital beds?

The sheets you select for the hospital beds are extremely important as a patient typically spends a lot of time resting and sleeping on the bed.  The mattress size of a hospital bed is generally different from the standard mattress specifications.

The standard size of a single hospital bed mattress is typically 36 inches by 80 inches (width by length).  Special hospital beds like bariatric beds or extra-large beds can be wider and longer.  A twin-size regular bed mattress typically measures 39 inches by 75 inches.

Here are the basic types of hospital bedsheets:

  1. Draw SheetA draw sheet, sometimes referred to as a lift sheet, is a small sheet placed crosswise on the middle of the bottom sheet to cover the area between the patient’s upper back and thighs. Medical practitioners generally use it to move a patient.  It is generally half the size of the regular sheet.
  1. Fitted SheetA fitted sheet is one that is properly tucked into the mattress, the fitting of this sheet is the most critical. It is essential that a fitted sheet is of the appropriate size as it cannot be stretched out if it is shorter than the mattress, especially while raising or lowering an adjustable hospital bed.

If the fitted sheet is too long then it will be difficult to tuck the bedsheet into the mattress.  Also, if the sheet is too long and touches the floor it can lead the patient or caregivers to trip.  It is also crucial that the sheet does not pile up under the patient as this can lead to discomfort.

A fitted sheet may sometimes have its corners or sides, or both fitted with elastic.

  1. Flat Sheet - A flat sheet is typically a rectangular sheet used as a top sheet to keep the bedding and bedsheet clean. Bed adjustments typically do not affect the size of the top sheet.
  1. Surgical Sheets: Surgical sheets are made of 100% cotton fabric. They are washable and reusable.  They are also autoclavable, so they can be sterilized using strong heat.  These sheets are used during surgery.

One of the main things to keep in mind before selecting a hospital bedsheet is the size of the mattress.  A hospital mattress is typically 6 inches deep however it can go up to 9 inches deep.  Pressure relief mattresses can be even deeper.

Another crucial thing to remember is that if there is a mattress topper that is used, a gel or a foam topper over the mattress increases the depth of the mattress.  So, it is better to measure the depth of the mattress after considering the topper, if any, as well.

The right bedsheet made of breathable fabric can prevent a patient from developing bedsores as well.

It is essential to get the Hospital bedsheet in the ideal size for the comfort of the patients who spend a prolonged time on a hospital bed.  Comfortable bedding is essential for good sleep as well as the overall well-being of the patient.  A good night’s sleep is essential for mental health, rebuilding damaged tissues as well as strengthening the immune system.
